Spring Cadet Week Beats Weather to Deliver Fun and Sailors of the Future
26-29 May, 2009

Our annual spring Cadet Week saw 19 novice cadet sailors brave testing conditions to scoop a variety of sailing certificates.

The Training Department provided 4 days of sail training tailored to the skills of the sailors. On Tuesday and Wednesday, when conditions were the worst, the instructors focused on rigging and basic sailing skills for the beginners, while the more advanced sailors worked in the river to learn sailing techniques to get their boats moving faster without capsizing in the high winds.

As the weather improved on Thursday and Friday, all of the sailors went to sea and started to sail racing courses. The week culminated in sailing relay races and fun challenges.

All of the cadets enjoyed the week immensely. Individual trophies were awarded to Henry Durman (Outstanding Cadet of the Week) and Ellie Rusbridge (Most Improved Cadet).

Special thanks go to James Millett and his crew of instructors, assistants and volunteers who delivered an excellent standard of sailing instruction and still found time to make it fun.

It is hoped that all of the sailors will develop their skills further through the ongoing cadet training activities of the Club. Cadet training takes place on Thursday evenings, with the next cadet week planned for 10-14 August.

This training will build towards the 2009 West Sussex Schools and Youth Sailing Association annual cadet regatta, which the Arun Yacht Club will proudly host on 12-13 September off Littlehampton beach.
